New Date For Brainerd Hamfest
Skip Jackson - KSØJ  (1/12/2012)

It was announced recently that the traditional Brainerd Hamfest usually held in July has been moved to April 14th, 2012.  Now moving a traditional hamfest to another time of the year can result in a possible drop in attendance. That makes it very important that we get the word out as widely as possible to prevent this.

In a recent talk I had with a member of the BARC (Brainerd Amateur Radio Club) they revealed that they had been concerned with the gradual drop in attendance with the July date so they decided to evaluate the possible reasons.  They had contacted a number of folks that usually attend in July and they said this date was interfering with family affairs and vacations.  Some said the building could be very hot in July.

Since the Fargo hamfest had vacated the April timeframe, they made the decision to move to April 14th.  This date was open on the calendar of important participants and was available for sanctioning by the ARRL.  The date of the event was therefore changed.

Let’s all make the adjustment and just remember that Brainerd hamfest now falls in between The Buffalo and the Arrowhead (Duluth/Superior) events.  Somehow that seems appropriate.

The brochure is available by clicking here.  Contact the club direct for information or to reserve a spot.

Minnesota Hams Go Digital (FLDigi)
Don Burgess - KCØQNA  (12/12/2011)

December 10, 2011 – (Henderson, MN) 24 Amateur Radio Emergency Responders chose Henderson City Hall as their place of choice last Saturday morning to learn all the new methods of communicating  for our local community hospitals, fire Departments, Police and Sheriff offices and the National Weather Service.  The tools used for this training are PDA’s, Laptops and amateur radio VHF/UHF frequencies.

Hams came from as far away as Windom, Winona, Stillwater and Marshall, MN to learn the new methods of digital communications.  Amateur Radio Emergency Services has been part of many communities for better part of 75 years and the ways they serve differs with almost as many ways they can communicate within their hobby.  They volunteer their time, gas, and equipment, time away from family and friends to help and respond to towns and communities in time of need.  The Ham Credo is – “When all else fails – Ham Radio prevails”

Hams in this case use a new format within Digital Communications that would allow a ham to operate and pass traffic for many agencies and maintain accuracy in the message being received or sent without relying on Email, internet or alternate forms of communicating.   Hams can showcase how they can be self-sufficient and effective in relaying critical data to the areas or departments that request their services.  If you’re interested in learning more or being an Amateur Radio Operator or Amateur Radio Emergency Service Responder…Find them on the web at:  www.minnesotaares.org  or www.arrl.org

In this photo taken at this training session included in the back row: Dan Starkenburg – Lyon County Emergency Coordinator, Don Burgess – Sibley County Emergency Coordinator,  Dennis Welu – Pipestone County Emergency Coordinator, Class Instructor Dave Frazier of LeSueur, Dave Zellman and son Chris Zellman of Cologne, MN. Bob Minor Class Instructor of Savage, MN, John Regan – Washington County Emergency Coordinator, Paul Oby,  Russell Marsolek – Winona County Assistant Emergency Coordinator, Ed Jacobson – City of Bloomington Emergency Radio Group, and Brian Dallman – Steele County ARES.

Front Row Left to Right:  Terry Wesley – Nicollet County ARES, Kevin Haney – MN Section Assistant Coordinator of Technologies/City of Tracy, MN Ambulance, Ann Foster – MN ARES Twin Cities Metro District Emergency Coordinator, Wayne Snyder – City of Bloomington Emergency Radio Group, Arl Weinrebe – Murray County Hospital and Southwest Minnesota District Emergency Coordinator, and Mike Ostlund – Director of the City of Bloomington Emergency Radio Group.

IARU Region 2 Requests Frequencies Be Kept Clear After Massive Earthquake Strikes Haiti

On Tuesday, January 12 at 4:53 PM Haiti time (2153 UTC), a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince, the island nation's capital. Communications in and out of Haiti have been disrupted. No word has been received as of yet from any of Haitian Amateur Radio operators. The ARRL encourages US amateurs to be aware of the emergency operations on the following frequencies: 7.045 and 3.720 MHz (IARU Region 2 nets), 14.265, 7.265 and 3.977 MHz (SATERN nets), and 14.300 MHz (Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net); the International Radio Emergency Support Coalition (IRESC) is also active on EchoLink node 278173.

IARU Region 2 Area C Emergency Coordinator, Arnie Coro, CO2KK, is coordinating a multi-national response by hams. There are organized nets on 7.045 and 3.720 MHz; amateurs are asked to monitor the frequencies, but to also keep them clear of non-essential traffic. Amateur Radio operators should also be aware that emergency traffic pertaining to the Haitian earthquake is expected on the SATERN frequencies of 14.265 MHz, 7.265 MHz and 3977 MHz, according to SATERN's leader, Major Pat McPherson. The Salvation Army is accepting health and welfare traffic requests on its Web site.

New Section Emergency Coordinator for Minnesota  (07/16/09)
Skip Jackson - KSØJ

This notice is to inform the ARRL Minnesota Section membership of an important personnel change.  Effective immediately, Mr. Dan Anderson, KDØASX is appointed to the position of Section Emergency Coordinator to replace Frank Karnauskas, N1UW.

Frank Karnauskas, our current SEC, asked me to find a replacement for him over a year ago as he has had some family issues that prevent him from spending as much time as he would like in this job.  In spite of both of us looking for a suitable replacement, we did not find that person until very recently.  Dan came forward just a week ago with this idea and we agree that he would do a great job.  He has a suitable background and is a strong amateur radio advocate.

Dan Anderson, KDØASX, (Pictured here) formerly ARRL Minnesota District 5 DEC, is also the Nobles County Emergency Management Director.  Having won 2007 Region 5 Outstanding Emergency Manager of the Year by the AMEM (Association of Minnesota Emergency Managers), he has successfully placed on behalf of Region 5 AMEM more than $60,000 worth of repeaters in District 5 using Homeland Security grant dollars.  He has also worked on behalf of the region's hospitals, health clinics, long-term care facilities and public health agencies to create an amateur radio emergency communications system between these entities.  He is also active in regional and statewide public safety interoperable communications planning, serving as a subcommittee chair charged with developing and funding a strategic technology reserve of equipment in case of catastrophic failure of public safety interoperable communications within the state.

Arl N. Weinrebe, KDØBJW, will replace Dan as District Five DEC where he was currently serving as Assistant DEC.

Please welcome Dan to this new and important assignment.  Dan will be actively recruiting volunteers to fill out vacancies in the emergency communications field organization and you may submit your information to him at danderson1@iw.net.

We are very grateful for Frank’s many contributions and his years of service and we all wish him well.  Frank will continue to work as as Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator.

Skip Jackson - KSØJ

The 2009 Field Day rules are now available.  Plan early, plan well for this years event.  Rules are located at http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2009/fd.html .

There will be a field day locator sight again this year.  Go here and put in your field day information so everyone can find your event. This has worked so well in the past, it will probably become a permanent fixture.  This helps all of us that want to visit your location but often it takes more time to find the details than actually visit.  Field Day Station Locator Service
